Causes of Back Pain

Chiropractic Northridge CA Back Pain

There are three(3) types stressors that our nerves must process:

  • MENTAL (thoughts)/EMOTIONAL (feelings),
  • CHEMICAL (diet/drugs)
  • PHYSICAL (posture/trauma)

Overwhelming stress on our nerves triggers a protective strategy called a Fight/Flight Stress Response. In a Flight/Flight Stress Response, muscles tighten to fight or run away. Pre-tensioned joints due to muscle tension pulling on the joint lowers the threshold of how much stress they can still handle. It takes less additional stress on a pre-tensioned joint to result in back pain.

Unbalanced postures and increased nerve tension are the result of ongoing stress. Daily stresses have a way of gradually settling in and gradually making changes to the nervous system and the spine over a longer period of time. Eventually, the muscles and joints become locked up and the spinal alignments become twisted, resulting in back pain.

Of greater concern, however, is when the nerves inside the spine hold onto too much tension. This tension interrupts the nerve reflexes and gradually leads to exhaustion, tissue breakdown, and organ system changes. Living with nerve interference is a very unhealthy situation. Listed below are some of the most common causes Northridge chiropractors see.

Subluxations in Northridge

There are two (2) types of subluxations. Primary Subluxations create spinal cord tension due to ligament attachments between the spinal bone and spinal cord. Our brain creates Secondary Subluxations (usually eight) to compensate for each primary subluxation. Secondary Subluxations create spinal joint tension. It is here that you will usually notice symptoms like back pain. A computer has a central processor for data. If it can't handle the data load what happens? Freezing, boots out, goes very slow processing commands. Your central nervous system (brain/spinal cord) is the central processor of stress in our mind/body. Spinal cord tension lowers our capacity to handle stress loads. What happens? We struggle to keep up with our daily stress load demands and age faster because we are pushing our mind and body to go beyond its current suppressed capacity.

Sprains, Strains and Spasms

This is commonly the source of back pain among the weekend warriors. You know, the type who have very little physical activity during the week, but once the weekend arrives, they push themselves way too much. By the end of the weekend, they are lying flat on their back counting down the hours before they can get in to see their chiropractor. Overworking the muscles or ligaments of the low back can lead to small tears in the tissues, which then become painful, swollen and tight back pain.

Stress

Whenever you become stressed beyond capacity, your body responds (Fight/Flight Stress Response) by increasing your blood pressure, blood sugar, blood fats, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood clotting factors and heart rate, flooding your body with stress hormones and tightening up your muscles for fight/flight. When you are stressed all the time, the chronic tension causes your muscles to become sore, weak and loaded with trigger points. If you are stressed out all of the time and you have low back pain, it is important get scanned for spinal cord tension, to do some relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing, as well as to get regular exercise.

Releasing Back Pain With Chiropractic

Choosing to participate in a chiropractic care program is a wise and important decision. Your care will be organized into two primary stages. We first must release the older habits that have locked into the spine as we begin to unwind spinal cord tension. The Release Program gives your body a minimum of eight weeks to make these important changes. You will be carefully monitored during this time as re-examinations will be at four-week intervals. These assessments include spinal motion and postural check-ups along with computerized neural scanning.

Our goal in this initial stage is to address the issues that created your back pain while unwinding deeper tension patterns. Coaching on the proper exercises, work and sleep postures, and relaxation strategies, as well as better nutritional choices to accelerate the healing process.

Chiropractic for back pain has been repeatedly shown to be the most effective treatment. In fact, major studies have shown that chiropractic care is more effective, cheaper, and has better long-term outcomes than any other care. In the 1990s the federal government proved that the chiropractic adjustment was the best treatment for pain and the only one to restore function.
